Student Receives Prestigious Award in Writing

Congratulations to sophomore Darby Haskel on earning a National Silver Medal from the 2017 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, the nation’s longest-running and most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in grades 7–12.

Haskel was awarded the medal in the Novel Writing category for his piece “Rookery.”

Competing at the regional level earlier in the year, Haskel received four honors including the Gold Key in Novel Writing, and both a Silver Key and an Honorable Mention in Poetry for “House of the Rising Sun,” and “Ares and Aphrodite.” Haskel also received an Honorable Mention for his Short Story, “The Pale Horse.”

Haskel now joins renowned past award recipients who have gone on to become leaders in their fields, including Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Philip Pearlstein, and Sylvia Plath. More recently, Stephen King, Richard Linklater, Zac Posen, and Lena Dunham received Scholastic Art & Writing Awards when they were teens.
