Students Attend National Leadership Conference

Congratulations to the following students who will be representing Colorado Academy at the Student Diversity Leadership Conference on December 8-10, 2016 in Atlanta, GA: Joanna Cotto, Zoriah Carter, Aliyah Fard, Dee Dennis, Waleed Khalifa, and Jack Van Gilder.
 
The conference is part of the National Association of Independent Schools gathering and is a multiracial, multicultural gathering of upper school student leaders (grades 9-12) from across the U.S. SDLC focuses on self-reflecting, forming allies, and building community.
 
Featured speakers include: Bryan Stevenson, founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative and one of the most acclaimed and respected lawyers in the nation; John Palmer, chair of the department of educational studies at Colgate University; Rinku Sen, President and Executive Director of Race Forward: The Center for Racial Justice Innovation and publisher of the award-winning news site Colorlines; David J. Johns, executive director of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African Americans; Richard Blanco, the fifth inaugural poet in US history—the youngest, first Latino, immigrant, and gay person to serve in such a role; Zak Ebrahim, whose father helped plan the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center, now dedicates his life to speaking out against terrorism and promoting peace and nonviolence; and Cristina Henríquez, the author of Come Together, Fall Apart, a collection of stories; The World in Half; and most recently The Book of Unknown Americans—one of the New York Times’ Notable Books of 2014.
