The power of service at CA and beyond

By Max Delgado
As a community, CA believes in the power of service and firmly holds that everyone has something to offer and something to learn.

We know that service has an amazing capacity for expanding a student’s worldview, as they learn to partner with the wider community. And while service is core to what we do, it’s also something that slowed down a bit during the first phase of the pandemic. As we enter a more open phase of the pandemic, the Upper School is taking steps to get back into the community, and into the habit of service. We are lucky to have Lisa Dean at the helm of these endeavors; in addition to her role in the Admission Office, she serves as the Upper School Service Learning Coordinator.

Our most recent efforts with service are taking place with the Class of 2025. The Ninth Grade will be engaging in two service opportunities this year, one which is happening today, here on campus, and one in the broader community later this spring.

To help the Ninth Graders better understand what they have to offer and what we have to learn, we invited Lindy Eichenbaum Lent, President and CEO of the Rose Community Foundation, to speak with the Ninth Grade on Tuesday. She offered a fabulous presentation, where she encouraged our students to think about how they can make positive change in the world through values-driven work.

During the long advisory today, our Ninth Grade students will be engaging in a variety of meaningful activities, from making no-sew blankets for the Children’s Hospital of Colorado to organizing donations for HOPE, the student-led CA nonprofit club that provides underserved families around the Denver area with life-changing resources.

We know that many CA families engage in service outside the school, with their families, friends, and faith communities. We hope you know we support all these efforts, and will continue to look for ways for our students to go out and live our mission in the broader community.
