Just a few minutes of reading each day and a refresher in mathematics can be instrumental in preparing your child to return to school in the fall, ready for the new school year! With that in mind, both the summer reading and mathematics review are designed to encourage and maintain the progress your child has made during the course of the previous year.
The summer math and reading assignments are for a student's entering grade in the 2023-2024 school year.
Please note: Summer reading books will not be available in the CA Bookstore.
Beginning in July, you may view and order your fall textbooks on the MBS Direct website. If you order between July 10-16, you will receive free shipping.

As students enter Eighth Grade and look towards Upper School, our aim is to offer some more mature options, both in terms of subject matter and level of difficulty. For this reason, it is our expectation that students and parents review all selections together prior to beginning a book.
As students read their chosen texts, they should contemplate and answer the following questions in writing.
Who is the protagonist and what is the main problem/conflict they face?
How do they solve this problem?
What is the setting (time and place), and why is it important to the overall meaning of the work?
What is the climax/turning point?
What is noteworthy about the author’s style?
What is the theme or central message of the book?
During the first week of school, you will complete a project using the answers to these questions to assess your knowledge and understanding of the Summer Reading books.
We hope that you have a terrific summer and that you have the opportunity to refresh your math skills in advance of returning to school in the fall.
Packets are tailored to what you have studied this year. They are designed to refresh your memory on concepts studied and give you practice in the types of thinking and problem-solving that will be most helpful to you in the coming year.
We recommend that students begin their packets in mid-July, but families may decide the timing that works for them.
Students should print out the packet, complete it, and bring it with them on the first day of school.
We look forward to working with you next fall; until then, enjoy your summer.
