Summary of Adolescent Speak Series Presentation

Jennifer Woods was super; thanks to all for joining us...
Thanks to all who attended our parent association and SPEAK session on adolescent sexuality. It was a thoughtful session led by Jennifer Woods, doctor of adolescent medicine. Her presentation was wide ranging and included discussions of puberty, facts on adolescent sexuality, stds and the importance of ongoing dialogue with teenagers about sexuality, peer pressure and decision making. I have included her presentation slides here.

At the conclusion of her talk, Jennifer offered the following Top Ten Tips for parents:

10. Know the facts.
9. Listen carefully.
8. Don’t be afraid to give information.
7. Respect your child’s privacy.
6. Use natural opportunities for discussion.
5. Communicate your values.
4. Discuss handling peer pressure.
3. Respond with understanding to awkward situations.
2. Encourage responsible behavior.
1. Be an askable parent.

Without question, it is important to maintain an open and honest dialogue with young people about these important issues. On our side of the partnership, we provide an ongoing human development curriculum which is designed to provide timely and valuable information to our sixth, seventh and eighth grade students. Our effort is to provide “just in time” information about the changes of puberty, parts and function of human reproduction, discussions and guidance on healthy relationships, consent and peer pressure skill development as well as information for our oldest students about stds and contraception. Throughout our work, we remind students to consult with their parents and abide by their family’s values.
