A Welcoming Tradition: New Parent Orientation Dinner

Jon Vogels
READY, SET, LAUNCH!

I was happy to attend the annual New Parent Dinner this past Tuesday night here on campus. This event is one of the key features marking the start of the school and I always look forward to it as a “feel good” opportunity for everyone. We shifted the format a little bit this year, which I think led to an even more personal touch. All three division principals spoke to their respective groups and welcomed families to the CA community.

In my talk to parents, I emphasized the various levels of support available to all students. I pointed out that the investment in a Colorado Academy education brings with it a host of resources, including academic advising and coaching, mental health counseling, accessible teachers who have dedicated student help time, and a hands-on administrative team. I reminded them that they chose this school for many good reasons, not the least of which was the personal touch we provide. We treat students as individuals and want to foster their growth in all the different important ways that occur during their high school years.

Among the various pieces I can offer to parents who are new to CA, regardless of which grade their child is starting in: trust the school. You have made a wise decision and a sound investment in a school that really cares about children. We are deeply committed to their academic and social/emotional growth. There are dozens of professionals, with many years of experience, with whom you will regularly come into contact. In terms of Upper School, that means we know adolescents very well; indeed, we specialize in them! In my nearly thirty years in independent schools I have seen thousands of students aged 14-18. That said, we also know you know your specific child better than anyone and want to hear you out when it comes to their well-being. Please keep us informed and communicate with the school as needed to ensure a successful partnership.

The Parent Association provides another crucial support structure for all parents in the school community. As Upper School Vice Presidents Liz Fuselier and Dana Gordon emphasized last Tuesday, by virtue of having a child in the school, every parent automatically becomes part of this group and can play a role in the well-being of the school. There are numerous volunteer opportunities available to anyone who has the time and interest in getting involved. Indeed, CA relies on its parent volunteers to a greater extent than many realize, and every in-kind contribution matters. For example, in the Upper School we need dozens of parent volunteers every spring to proctor our Advanced Placement tests. Many schools use up valuable teacher time to proctor tests, and that can stretch faculty at a time of year when they already working very hard. So the parent support in this regard is vital and appreciated.

There are numerous other ways for parents in all divisions to volunteer. More than that, we hope that parents come to value the community aspect of the school, which becomes a hub of activity for the adults as well as their children. I look forward to getting to know the new families this year and of course welcome the opportunity to continue the good work with the families who have been at CA before now.
