Arts Are Alive at CA

Jon Vogels
It's been a long-standing aspect of CA's program that the arts are both celebrated and encouraged as an essential part of a child's education. No one at the school views the arts as merely "extra-curricular," but rather welcomes all forms of artistic expression as essential to academic and social growth. Just this past week I saw and heard many examples of that commitment around campus.

On Sunday, I was treated to a recital by the students selected to participate in this year's Honors Concert. Every year dozens of students in all grades audition either solo or in groups before a distinguished panel of judges from CA and the "outisde world." Because so many students received high scores from the panel of outside judges, we actually had to divide the selected performers into two groups (or else, as Fine and Performing Ars director Jan De Sal quipped, "We could be here for four hours!") One concert featured mostly strings and flute performances and took place in Schotters Music Building. I personally attended the other, more piano-oriented concert, in Froelicher Theatre and what a treat that was. I can't recall seeing so many amazing performances, one after another, and I witnessed impressive musicality from everyone representing all three divisions.

Similarly, in past weeks the school has been treated to the many portfolio exhibits in the new Ponzio Art Center. Senior students of Katy Hills, Jesse Myers and Gwylym Cano have been showcasing their work since before winter break on a rotating basis.

I can also look forward to many upcoming productions, recitals and end-of-year celebrations in the weeks ahead. The all-school art show, of which the chartreuse colored geese around campus are a harbinger, takes place on April 23. The last weekend in April brings our Upper School musical, Lucky Stiff (think of Weekend At Bernie's with singing). And Sunday, May 6 is the final choir concert of the year. There are also numerous other recitals, performances and exhibitions between now and the end of school. It's always a great finish to a productive and artistic year for our students.
