Spring Sports Going Strong

Jon Vogels
As we know in Colorado, spring often brings . . . bad weather. Nevertheless, our spring sports teams have persevered and have managed to get in the majority of their contests thus far. And they are all doing very well. In fact, this is the first time I can recall in my 15 years at CA that ALL the spring sports teams are ranked in the Top 10 in the state. Baseball, boys and girls lacrosse, and girls soccer are all off to great starts. Two other CHSAA sports—girls golf and girls tennis—don’t rank teams during the season, but our young women are doing very well in their competitions as well. Plus, many may not know that we have several track and field athletes competing with the Denver Christian team in 2A competition just across Pierce Street.

The unpredictable weather means that many games and practices take place in less than ideal conditions. I saw a few minutes of a baseball game last week that was played in weather more suitable for football. But CA and their opponents from Summit carried on anyway. Our new field house has been put to excellent use when the weather has been really wet. How great that indoor practices can occur in this amazing new facility—and multiple teams can participate simultaneously.

I also like to point out that both our lacrosse teams, like our field hockey team in the fall, compete at the 5A level; thus, we play teams with student populations as large as Cherry Creek High School. That is a tall order, and yet CA remains championship-level competitive nonetheless. Led by senior Lauren Russell (25 goals so far), junior Sloane Murphy (20 goals), and freshman Katharine Merrifield (19), the three-time defending state champ girls lacrosse team is off to an undefeated start again.

So it’s a good time of year to get out and cheer on your favorite team. Maybe we will even enjoy a few consecutive days of sunshine!
