Colorado Academy mourns the recent loss of long-time friend of the school and philathropist, Anabel McHugh and the wife of the late Colorado Academy trustee, Jerry McHugh, Sr.

 

Mrs. McHugh passed away on December 25, 2017. She is survived by her five children Jerry, Jr. (Stacy), Erin Gogolak (John), June McHugh (Tom Gould), Burke (Amy), and Chris (Susan); seventeen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry.

 

In 1979, Mrs. McHugh and her husband established the McHugh Family Faculty Enrichment Fund at Colorado Academy to support faculty professional development at CA. Countless faculty members have attended workshops, institutes, and trainings with the help of this endowment fund. In addition, the McHughs helped to raise the money to build CA’s McHugh Coors Gymnasium with their friend, Bill Coors.

 

Mrs. McHugh grew up in Hutchinson, Kansas and moved to Denver in 1939. She attended Smith College and graduated in 1953. Together, she and Jerry had five children. Several children and grandchildren have attended CA including June (daughter), CA '80; granddaughter Holly graduated in 2006, and Jessica McHugh and Anabel McHugh Garner graduated in 2003.  Chris, ’87, and brother Burke ’83 also attened CA. Also among the grandchildren is current student, Maire McHugh, (Grade 11). Our condolences to current parents Jerry and Stacy.

 

In addition to their tremendous support of CA, the McHughs started the Colorado I Have A Dream Foundation through which they supported numerous potentially at-risk students by providing them with a variety of academic opportunities. They also supported the Colorado Outward Bound School, the Neighborhood Partners Project, and they spent countless hours volunteering for Denver Public Schools and other organizations.

 

A Vigil Service will be held in Mrs. McHugh's honor at Horan/McConaty Mortuary, 1091 S. Colorado Blvd on January 1, 2018, at 3 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, January 2, 2018, at 10 a.m. at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 2626 E. 7th Ave Parkway. Burial will follow the Mass.
