It is a rare parent who hasn’t had some experience with a child who is a picky eater.  So, parents are sometimes surprised when their children are willing to eat foods at school that they might never be willing to eat at home.  When a child’s affinity for only familiar foods interferes with establishing healthy eating habits, then parents are at a loss for what to do. We know that it is important for kids to eat a varied diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to promote physical, cognitive, and behavioral development. Variety is so important as it ensures that the child is receiving all of the necessary vitamins and minerals for optimal health and growth.

 

So, at Colorado Academy, Food Services General Manager Paul Worley and Executive Chef Chris Kinney are working with the Sodexo Dietetic Intern Leana Maestas to host fun and educational events in October called ‘Try it Tuesday!” The goal of these weekly tastings is to encourage the children to step outside of their comfort zones and learn that trying new foods doesn’t have to be scary, and in fact it can be a lot of fun!

 

 On Tuesdays in October, students will be encouraged to approach the event table outside of the cafeteria and taste test the delicious seasonal fruit or vegetable that is featured on that day.

 

Says Worley, “This experience will not only give the students an opportunity to try out tasty new foods in a fun, welcoming, no-pressure environment but, they will also be given the chance to learn more about where these foods come from and how these foods benefit their health.”  In addition, students will be able to take home recipes to prepare at home (with mom and dad for the little ones).  This is a great opportunity for students, faculty, and parents to share in some discourse about healthy eating habits and incorporating a variety of foods into their every day diets.  Parents are welcome to come by as well!  See event details below.
