From First Grade to Twelfth: Wise Beyond Their Years

by Mike Davis, Ph.D.
Head of School

We are delighted to be back in session and to have welcomed our students back; they are so full of energy and enthusiasm. From our youngest students to our seniors, their spirit captures the promise of a CA education that unfolds for the entire year.

At our opening all-school assembly on Tuesday, I asked students what they are most looking forward to this year.  Our First Graders enthusiastically raised their hands for me to call on them, and their answers were great.

One student said, “science.” Another said, “art.” Still another talked about looking forward to going to the library.  One even shared that he was looking forward to homework! (This, of course, got a loud reaction from the entire student body.) Then, one first grader threw down a serious challenge and said, “higher learning.” I couldn’t believe it.

Later in the week at Upper School Town Hall, senior Gemma Ryu provided the year’s first Senior Speech and threw down an equally amazing challenge – for students to try new things, discover their passions, and push themselves mentally and physically, just as she does when she plays her favorite sport of rugby. Find the full text of her speech here.

We all look forward to a great year at CA.  There is a lot happening on campus, and I encourage you to follow my blog, as well as keep up with happenings through our print and electronic communications, through the CA website and our social media feeds. Also, don’t forget Back-To-School Nights later this month that are scheduled in each division. These are important times for parents to connect with their child’s teachers and hear from faculty directly about our learning goals.

As always, my office door is open for all constituencies — students, parents, faculty, and alumni — to talk about the school and our work together on behalf of children.  There are so many ways to become a part of the life of CA, and I encourage everyone to find a way to get involved.  Enjoy the long weekend!
