CA to Host Global Water Challenge Saturday

Colorado Academy will host The Global Water Challenge for Middle School students this Saturday, December 10, 2016.  The Global Water Challenge gives CA’s middle school students the opportunity to research and study water issues locally and globally. Students work in small groups to research their selected water issues, collaborate, and problem‐solve. Students use teacher‐led class time to explore their topics in greater depth, to prepare and perfect water-themed skits in preparation for competition day.

Final skits are presented to a team of water engineers, nonprofit professionals, and other experts who off feedback and insights. Presentations run from 9 a.m. to noon, and each lasts approximately 10 minutes. Countries studied this year include Kenya, India, Nepal, Vietnam, Rwanda, Myanmar, Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Haiti, Sierra Leone, Bangladesh, and Ghana.

During competition day, students will have the chance to interact with some 30 volunteer judges including high school students and professionals who have worked with a variety of environmental health issues. Previous judge panels have included representatives from:
  • Denver Rotary
  • St. Joseph Hospital
  • Denver Health
  • Anschutz Medical Campus
  • Engineers Without Borders
  • Water for People
  • Denver Water
  • iTriage

The Global Water Challenge was started in 2003 and is one of Global Health Connections’ original projects. Global Health Connections, Inc. (GHC) is an educational outreach 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to bringing people together to solve global health issues. Colorado Academy middle school science teacher Sue Counterman is a member of the GHC Board of Directors.

Says Colorado Academy Head of School Dr. Mike Davis, “The Global Water Challenge offers the kind of real-world, hands-on learning that students must experience in order to be the creative problem solvers of the future. We are excited to once again host and take part in this competition.”
