What First Graders Ask About College

Colorado Academy has a quiet, beloved and decades-old tradition in which last year’s Kindergartners – now First Graders – write letters to their Senior Buddies – members of CA’s Class of 2016. The letters are tucked into a college care package that is shipped off with goodies baked right in CA’s kitchen, and they reach the college freshmen just in time for their first semester finals. It is often a welcome reminder of home, and a sweet remembrance of life at CA.

In their letters, the First Graders share some very important updates since they saw their buddies last spring:
I lost six teeth.
I got stung by a jellyfish.
I like to bike.
I miss you.
I love Primary Lab in Lower School.
I climbed my first 14'er.
I can jump.
I can leap.
I grew.
I lost a tooth on my birthday.
I am taller.

And the First Graders ask some insightful questions of their former buddies:
Do you like college?
What is your room like at school?
How big is your bed?
Are you having fun there?
How is the food?
Do you miss your parents?
Do you stay up late?
Do you get along with your roommate?
How much homework do you have?
Are you doing well with homework?
What is your teacher’s name?
Do you like to study hard?

And they even make a few demands:
Come to my classroom (followed by the room number or the teacher’s name).
Visit me.
Do you homework.
Study hard.

In addition to the endearment, one can begin to appreciate the nature and value of Colorado Academy’s Pre-K through 12 environment, where children create relationships and learn to care for one another and keep caring long after their time on campus is gone. As we approach this Thanksgiving holiday, this special Colorado Academy culture and community is one of the many things for which I am grateful. My wish for all of you is a restful and meaningful holiday that is shared with family and friends.
