Comprehensive preparation for life beyond high school enables young people to embark on this next phase of freedom with less trepidation. Colorado Academy believes in bringing those who have experienced teachable moments to share these with our students in a constructive, purposeful way.
To that end, we are extremely pleased to be able to have your child work with one of the country’s most highly regarded student safety experts and sought-after lecturers. Katie Koestner appeared on the cover of TIME Magazine at age 18 after becoming the first woman in history to speak out as the victim of campus date rape. She has appeared on Oprah, Good Morning America, CNN, NBC Nightly News, and over 50 other national media outlets. She is the subject of movies by HBO and Lifetime. She is the architect of Federal student safety legislation and the author of numerous published works. On November 18t and 29t, Ms. Koestner and I will present an engaging and informative program on the topics of sexual assault and transitions to college. Your son or daughter will have an advisory discussion next week prior to the presentation. And then, through Ms. Koestner’s words, the students will benefit from hearing both a first-person experience, as well as learning about the social landscape of college life. We will address such topics as: sexual assault, hazing, college disciplinary systems, underage drinking, harassment, roommate agreements, and social media use.
We encourage you to talk with your child about the program and what it meant to them personally. This is a fantastic opportunity for your child to have an important conversation about life choices. As always, Colorado Academy’s Director of Counseling Liza Skipwith will be available after the presentation to help students process this emotional topic should they need her services.
