What's Changed on Our Campus

By Mike Davis, Ph.D.
Head of School

As the summer slowly winds down, the collective energy that drives our school days at Colorado Academy will soon be harnessed and back in motion.

When you arrive back on campus in August, you’ll notice a lot of work in and around our facilities. Two major projects underway are the renovation of and addition to the historic Welborn House on campus, as well as the remodel of the existing wing and addition of a new wing to our Visual Arts Center.  Please remember that while Welborn House is under construction, our Admission and Business Offices are in temporary quarters: Admission offices are in the Campus Center across from the Dining Hall, and the Business Office is on the second floor of the Raether Library. These two buildings are a part of the See It Through Capital Campaign, which is in its early stages as we seek further funding for the remaining gym and theater projects, and our endowment.

Also in the works are a renovation of one of our Middle School science labs, a remodeled Lower School lobby and the creation of new teaching spaces for our Lower School learning and support specialists. Crews completed the remodel around CA’s pool and pump house, and summer campers and our Horizons students put the facility to good use all summer. Other updates include a renovation of the Information Technology  Office in Raether Library, updates to the Raether Language Lab, and crews also upgraded the fiber optic cabling loop on campus.

All of this has been taking place amidst the flurry of activity with up to 800 summer campers each day, and more than 140 students in our Horizons program.  Thank you, as always, to our Operations Crew.

At the same time, we’ve been focused on our programming for the coming year that includes an emphasis on the health and well-being of our students. While we promote hard work, dedication, and commitment among kids, we also see the need for students to have a healthy balance in their lives. Among the resources we can provide are the talks we host through our SPEAK lectures  (especially Dr. Michael Thompson on September 20 and Debra Lythcott-Haims on December 8).  Lythcott-Haims and other parenting specialists have been part of an effort that started at Stanford University to partner with schools and families to promote healthy social and emotional development in children.  As we get set to begin the new year, here are some helpful tips. Enjoy the remaining days of your summer, and we look forward to seeing you soon!
