Spring Programs Start in Impressive Fashion

I asked our Head Coach of Girls Golf, Beth Folsom, how her most recent golf match went at Indian Hills and she replied, “The best result in history.” I clarified with Folsom, who is known for understated enthusiasm and she replied, “Best result in program history, ever.” As a team, we were 8 under and we had 2-5 under pars 67 (Kacey Godwin and Caroline Jordaan) and a 74 (Cassie Kneen). That’s impressive.

The team is 3-0 on the season and poised to make a run at league and state titles. After our 9-8 overtime win in boys lacrosse over 8th ranked Rock Canyon, Head Coach Randy Colley, says, “The boys fought bell to bell.” You can’t ask a team for much more than that. At press time, the boys record sits at 9-2, good enough, hopefully, for a state playoff berth in May. The emergence of Andrew Maffei at defense, Tyler Little in the goal, Jack Cmil and Cam Pollock at faceoff, and Matt Pollock on attack has fueled the team throughout the season.

Certainly, the experience and skill of Winston Palmeri, Mac Mease, and John Baron, the team’s triumvirate of seniors, are a good reason the squad is doing so well. Girls Lacrosse Head Coach Steph Sanders has her reigning state championship team off and running and sporting an 8-0 record mid-way through the season. Returning All-Americans goalie Bridget Sutter and defender and Marquette commit Anna Gallagher are the backbone of this year’s team on the defensive end along with seniors Sammy Little, Ella Annest and junior Nellie Turnage. Juniors Sydney Prokupek, who scored the overtime winner versus Mullen in the fifth game of the season and Claire Wright, also a basketball standout and leading scorer so far for the girls, leads a young offense. Seniors Emma Richards and Maddie Webster provide leadership and scoring punch. Underclassmen Lauren Russell, Sloane Murphy, and Maggie Silliman are spark plugs that help to energize this well-balanced team.

The girls soccer program, also a state champion in 2015, has also started the season well and as of this writing, boasts a 7-2 record with all 7 wins resulting in a shut out. The girls have outscored their opponents 35-2 and the two losses were both 0-1 affairs and one of them was in double overtime! Sophomore Kira Kurtz has firmly planted herself in the goal as a starter and doing a fabulous job. Head Coach Sean Stedeford, at the helm of the girls program for eight years garnered his 100th win in a recent 9-0 rout over Faith Christian. Congratulations Sean!

Bob Ulrich, head of Girls Tennis, is seeing a strong season unfold with senior Tara Edwards leading the way. As of press time, the girls were 3-2 and 3-0 in the league. The two lone losses came at the hands of Cherry Creek and Cheyenne Mt. Edwards playing in the #1 singles spot has had strong outings vs. Cheyenne Mt., Peak to Peak, and St. Mary’s. Savannah Mease and Morgan Bullen round out the 2nd and 3rd singles positions. The team had a great result in the Pueblo West tournament finishing 4th with Bullen and Edwards finishing second and the entire squad fairing well against much larger schools. CA will again host regionals on the 4th and 5th of May at Stuie’s courts. Regionals are a fun event that sees plenty of student support for their tennis classmates!

Baseball is seeing a resurgence under third-year Head Coach, JT Putt. Putt’s attention to detail, organization, and motivational techniques are exemplary. Plus, he’s a great baseball coach. Putt’s young 9 have put up a 6-1 record to date and won their league opener over Jefferson Academy, 5-1. Senior Peyton Rice hit a monster homerun in the JA game that easily cleared the left field fence. Fellow seniors Dat Le and Lorenzo Lopez provide exceptional leadership with Le manning the majority of the catching duties. Good things are in the works for Putt’s squad that boasts six sophomores and four freshmen.

As the spring season winds down and the state playoffs descend upon the CA programs, come out and watch a game or two. The CA athletes and their coaches have worked hard for their success. Support by the community is much appreciated. Go Mustangs!
