Students Design Structures for All-School Arts Festival

CA Upper School art students are in the middle of a clay hand building project. The assignment is to create a house or structure for CA’s upcoming “Fantastical” All-School Arts Festival in May. Students are creating a “Fantastical Village”  — a  fantasy art installation.

The artists did a quick study of an architectural style, sketched out fantastical versions of that style and then made mock structures out of paper. The paper templates then guided the building of their clay slab pieces. Some pieces were made using a coiling technique. This whole process has taken five weeks and the pieces are now going into the kiln to be prepared for glazing. Says art teacher Katy Hills, "Working in clay takes extraordinary skill, time and patience. The artists will begin throwing clay on the pottery wheels for the rest of the trimester."

Be sure to come see the Fantastical Village at the Art Festival on May 16th.
