Juniors Take Personality and Career Assessments

Jon Vogels
Recently, our Director of Counseling Services Liza Skipwith met with the junior class to introduce them to the famous Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, one of the most oft-used personality assessment tools in the world.  I was reminded by Wikipedia that the MBTI was originally created by a mother-daughter team (the Briggs and Myers named on the test) based on the theories of the famous psychologist Carl Jung.  Basically, they founded the test on the notion that “there are four principal psychological functions by which humans experience the world – sensation, intuition, feeling, and thinking – and that one of these four functions is dominant for a person most of the time.”  Understanding where one fits on the MBTI helps people to better understand how they operate in the world and within systems, and how better to understand how others do the same.

Mrs. Skipwith likes to use the test as a means for helping kids formulate their sense of self and others.  She notes: “The junior class received an email from me with the link to take the assessments. The class has until March 30th to complete both assessments. I will meet with the junior class again on April 1st to goover the results with them and give them a better understanding of how to utilize the information provided in the interpretative report each student received by email from me.”

The other instrument we use to assist students is called the Strong Interest Inventory, which is "a self-report questionnaire used to measure and describe people’s interests in a broad range of occupations, work and leisure activities and educational subjects." Again, the Strong is one of the most widely recognized tools for helping students discover what their interests might mean in terms of careers.  It takes about 30 minutes for students to complete.

In early April, once all the survey results have been recorded and results sent back, I encourage parents to ask their child about their own results, and perhaps they can explore their career options further with the report provided.
