Artists and Authors Visit CA Classrooms

Thanks to Gary Myers, who spent two weeks as an artist-in-residence at Colorado Academy working with students as part of the Upper School Visual Arts Program. Myers is an accomplished artist and art educator, and he says he is excited to work with Upper School students at CA. Myers has worked in a variety of media and has extensive experience as an art educator, both in the U.S. and around the world. His philosophy says, “A complete art program allows every student to increase positive attitudes towards self, others, and the environment through creative experiences.”

Problem solving and creative learning encourage students to connect visual knowledge to other subjects and to respond with innovation, understanding, flexibility and imagination.

In addition to working with students, Myers offered workshops for faculty, staff, parents, alumni, and friends of CA. He says, “Good art education is not achieved by transmitting inert facts. Learning, while adapted to the styles of individual students, should be born of students, informed by inquiry processes and centered on challenging content.”

Visiting CA later this spring will be children’s author Kelly DiPucchio. DiPucchio is the award-winning author of several children’s books, two of which, Grace For President and The Sandwich Swap, were New York Times bestsellers.

She also wrote the familiar favorites of Sipping Spiders Through a Straw: Campfire Songs for Monsters, Liberty’s Journey, and Dinosnores. Reviewers have praised her work as “hilarious,” admiring her writing’s “rollicking rhythm.”In college, a creative writing professor encouraged DiPucchio to submit work for publication.

However, she says it wasn’t until after her three children were born that she became interested in writing picture books. She says her children “taught me everything I needed to know about becoming a picture book author.” Watch for information about the April visit and the chance to order books.
