Notes from the Week and Sneak Previews

Jon Vogels
The Winterfest theme has been announced . . . it is “The Roaring ‘20s”! Amazing that the decade to which the students are referring is now almost 100 years past! For other Winterfest details, please see my post from last week.

Faculty have made their final edits on their interim proposals for this coming May 23-28. Now Experiential Education Director Forbes Cone will put together the catalog, consisting of 32 exciting offerings. Students in the 12th grade will be selecting Interim choices by lottery number first in the way they have done in the past. A few days later, juniors, sophomores, and freshmen will be involved in an online sign-up process in which they rank order their choices. More detailed explanations of procedures will be explained to the students and will also be contained in the Interim course catalog.

Please note: in some cases varsity athletes will not be able to sign up for certain away interims because of conflicts with championship game dates (girls golf, girls soccer, girls lacrosse and boys baseball). We have alerted those students and it will be apparent when they register which Interims are available and which are not. This is an unfortunate consequence of the way the May calendar falls out this year and the way CHSAA sets its athletic playoff schedule. Still, all students will have plenty of away and local options.

Believe it or not, course registration for the 2016-2017 school year is right around the corner. We are in the process of compiling our new course catalog, which will be available to students and parents in early February. As always, we will have a wide range of old favorites and new offerings. Students will be working with their advisors in February on the sign-up process. Parents should feel free to reach out to advisors, class deans or current teachers for advice or information about what classes their children are recommended to take. Do know that all advisors will be discussing course selection as part of their parent-advisor conferences on March 11.

As part of our ongoing global travel initiatives, six Turkish exchange students and their faculty chaperone arrive in the US on Sunday and will be staying with their CA host families for two weeks. We are excited to welcome these four girls and two boys, along with their teacher Ediz Kaya from the Uskudar American Academy in Istanbul.
