Already Thinking About Summer? Consider Service

The new year is a time when families begin making summer plans. During the 2015 summer, Colorado Academy student Arthur Wright volunteered in the Dominican Republic with VISIONS Service Adventures, an international community service program for teens. Wright was part of a group of high school students who lived and worked in the lively capital city of Santo Domingo.

The teens constructed two classroom additions for special education students at a school built by previous groups. This school, along with several others that volunteers have built in the D.R. over the past 20 years, helps provide an education to several thousand students who otherwise would not be able to attend school. The teen volunteers also built an infrastructure at a new baseball field while helping to organize and facilitate the popular Campamento de Juveniles day camp for primary school kids, with activities that included English lessons, games, sports, and art and crafts.

In equal measure with the volunteer work, the experience focused on cross-cultural exchanges and excursions. The group learned about Dominican culture through shared work projects and social visits with local hosts.

Other CA students chose a variety of summer experiences.  Read about more students by visiting these links: Nick Bain, Abel Ramirez, Annie Miller.
