Mayor Declares Students H.O.P.E Day

Denver Mayor Michael Hancock today issued a proclamation declaring this Saturday Colorado Academy Students H.O.P.E. Day to mark the work of CA students and their service to the community.  This year’s event co-chairs, Maddie Webster and Sage Lochhead, read the proclamation before an Upper School Town Hall meeting. Students H.O.P.E. is a student-run community service project that serves nearly 2,000 people each December, bringing families from Denver area shelters to CA’s campus in southwest Denver and offering clothing, personal care items, wrapped holiday gifts for children, children’s books, flu shots, and more. This year’s event will take place Saturday, December 5. The Mayor’s Proclamation reads:
 
WHEREAS, Colorado Academy, a Pre-K through 12 school in southwest Denver, hosts thousands of people each December for a student-run, charitable event; and
 
WHEREAS, the event, titled Students H.O.P.E. (Helping Other People Eat), has been a project of Colorado Academy Upper School students for more than 20 years; and
 
WHEREAS, together, more than 100 young volunteers are led by a Students H.O.P.E. committee to organize and stage the event each year; and
 
WHERAS, those living at or below the poverty rate struggle with basic necessities, food, security, and providing for their families during the holidays; and
 
WHEREAS, families receive clothing, personal care items, diapers, a festive meal, holiday gifts, children’s books, flu shots, and more – all donated by members of the CA community; and
 
WHEREAS, Colorado Academy also provides bus transportation from shelters and social service agencies across Denver; and
 
WHEREAS, this event brings forth the joy, benevolence, and spirit of the holiday season;
 
NOW, THEREFORE, I MICHAEL B. HANCOCK, MAYOR of the City and County of Denver, Colorado, by virtue of the authority vested in me, do hereby officially proclaim DECEMBER 5, 2015, to be known as:
 
“COLORADO ACADEMY STUDENTS H.O.P.E. DAY”
 
In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the4 official seal of the City and County of Denver to be affixed this 5th day of December, 2015.
