Math Day Results Include a First Place Finish

Congratulations to Colorado Academy senior George Younger who earned a first place finish on November 5 for a perfect score of 100 on the PROBE (Problems Requiring Original and Brilliant Efforts), an individual test at the annual Colorado State University Math Day

The Mathematics Department at CSU has hosted this college-bowl style tournament since 1977. The event attracts up to 400 of the best high school math students from Colorado and neighboring states. The competition includes a double-elimination tournament with three-member teams from 64 schools, as well as the PROBE test.  It is a written test featuring challenging problems, the top 10 winners of which receive scholarship offers at CSU.

One of three Colorado Academy teams, the school’s “A-Team,” comprised of Younger, David Schurman, Christina Bear, Cooper Bedin, and Greg Cain, earned a 5th place finish of 32 teams in the Small School division.  The A-Team won six rounds, and Younger answered more than 40 questions correctly.

Other CA competitors included Julia Kelly, Lorenzo Lopez, Hidai Olivas, Jacob Abbott, Eric Bear, Heather Kurtz, Lauren Fossel, Rachel Kim, Ethan Jaszewski, and Alex Kim.  Says CA mathematics teacher Charity Smith, “All three teams had a great time and enjoyed the team-building and challenge of the contest. We also witnessed some pretty amazing mathematicians in action!” CA math teacher Steven Hammer also attended the event.
