Volunteers Work to Provide Operating Costs For Horizons Children’s Program

Volunteers are getting ready for the annual event that provides nearly all of the operating costs for Horizons at Colorado Academy. Horizons is a year-round, comprehensive enrichment program that helps disadvantaged students develop the academic, social, and emotional life-skills necessary for long-term success. Each winter, the organization’s Wine & Dine event, featuring local top chefs, top-rated wines, and unique auction items, provides most of the group’s year-round operating costs.

In 2016, Wine & Dine will be held on Thursday, February 18, 2016 on the Colorado Academy campus.

Horizons at CA belongs to a national network of 47 programs in 17 states, and this is the only such affiliate in the state of Colorado. Each program operates on the campus of a private school or university. Horizons is entering its nineteenth year at Colorado Academy and serves more than 140 students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through 10.

The program has a proven track record providing on average 3-4 months in academic gains over just six weeks in the summer, a time during which children would normally lose up to three months of skills. Additionally, through year-round “Super Saturday” programming, students stay connected to their Horizons teachers and their peers. The year-to-year retention rate of students is 98%

Horizons is provided with use of CA’s facilities, bus transportation, dining services, and educational resources. Additionally, many student and parent volunteers from CA provide support for the program. Faculty and staff salaries and other program operating costs are provided through generous support from the community and other foundations.

That support means that Horizons can provide two healthy meals per day for each student during the summer program, quality teaching staff from throughout the Denver area, experiential day and overnight field trips, daily swimming instruction, and the development of a deep and lasting appreciation for the outdoors and life-long learning. CA’s is among the first programs in the country to develop a Horizons high school component. Students in this age group take part in college visits, application “boot camps,” interviewing skills, and much more.
