My "Summer Reading" List

by Dr. Mike Davis, Head of School

In addition to being outdoors during the summer, I like to spend my time reading.   I’ve shared my “summer reading" list with faculty and new parents at some “back-to-school” talks, and based on the requests for copies, I thought I would post this on my blog.

As a historian, I am generally drawn to non-fiction, and I love studying leadership.  My reading recommendations often come from book reviews in the Wall Street Journal and New York Times

I also bookmark interesting articles about education from a variety of sources and then plow through them over the summer.  Below are some of the most provocative.  Just because I am sharing these doesn’t mean they reflect my viewpoint or philosophy, but they do get me thinking about our place in the world and the role that educators play.

We live in an age that provides instant access to volumes of information. Yet, when Americans select only news sources that are congruent with just one political viewpoint, they limit the opportunity for diverse perspectives. I look broadly to ensure that I am listening to as many perspectives as possible, and I work to open my mind to new ideas and to be empathetic to new voices.

There are many voices represented here. Some are insightful, some, I think, are just plain wrong, and some are really funny.  You can decide what you think:

Elijah Wald’s Dylan Goes Electric
Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Between the World and Me
Susan Engel’s The Hungry Mind
Don Winslow’s The Cartel and Power of the Dog
Stephen Lekson’s The Chaco Meridian
