Frequent are my conversations with parents that center on two topics: the first is that our children are not growing up the way that we did, and boy, has parenting changed! Every parent has his or her own examples of the vast differences between their own experiences and that of their children, reflecting that ever-present sentiment about how tough parenting can be.
In a recent editorial, David Brooks wrote in
The New York Times that parents desperately want happiness for their children, but they also want success. The intersection of those two parental longings sometimes means both unintentional and unhappy outcomes.
At this time of year when expectations run high and celebrations abound, I thought Brooks's words were worth sharing.
Here's his column titled “Love and Merit.”
