Horizons Set to Welcome Students for Summer, Partners for National Campaign

Horizons at Colorado Academy is getting ready to welcome more than 140 Denver public school students from June 15 to July 24, 2015 to participate in this comprehensive academic enrichment program. In the classroom, students will focus on academic skills in literacy, writing, and math.

In a single summer, Horizons students typically advance four months in their skill levels, preventing the “summer slide” and preparing them for success in the coming academic year. Outside the classroom, students participate in daily swim lessons at CA, weekly field trips, and a variety of electives. In addition to the six-week enrichment program, Horizons students take part in year-round activities at CA including everything from STEM workshops and computer programming to creative origami and art projects.

CA Upper School math teacher Maeve Siu will lead CA’s growing Horizons high school program that will serve ninth and tenth graders. Students will learn a variety of skills including time management, interpersonal communication, financial literacy, how to succeed in an interview, public speaking, learning how to complete a college application, and more. Research shows that Horizons students play a key role in their families as they bring home lessons and share many of the skills that they have learned through the program.

CA has partnered with the Horizons program nationally and has hosted the program on its campus for 18 years. It has been an expression of CA’s institutional commitment to serving low income youth throughout the greater Denver area. In addition, Horizons has a positive impact on the CA community as well; this year alone, nearly 30 CA students have volunteered to help the program.

Partnering for National Facebook Campaign Horizons National — the umbrella organization for CA’s local program, has teamed up with Facebook for a national campaign to support the more than 40 local Horizons chapters. If you’re on Facebook, “Like” our Horizons Facebook page so that you don’t miss the organizations national awareness day posts on May 20.
