PlatFORUM is Coming April 3!

Jon Vogels
A long-standing Upper School tradition returns next week when we spend Friday, April 3, building community and engaging in educational workshops.  Formerly called Diversity Day, this year’s event has been renamed PlatFORUM to better reflect the goals of the program.  We have sponsored this particular day every other year for the last 16 years, alternating this program with Think & Drive.

At least a half dozen teachers and a large group of 20+ students have been working on the planning of this exciting program and will also be instrumental in carrying out the plan on April 3.  Attendance is required for all students, as PlatFORUM will last the entire school day. The theme this year is “21st Century Conversations.”

The overall goals for the day are straightforward:
  • Promote self-reflection
  • Provide tools to engage in and continue dialogue around social justice
  • Foster a safe environment for all students
  • Expose students to new cultural elements
  • Establish meaningful relationships and build community
  • Have fun!

Both student-led and teacher-led workshops, all of which have been vetted by administrators and the organizing teachers, will be interspersed with activities designed to foster better understanding of both cultural difference and similarity. In addition, we will have a guest performance by Toluwanimi Obiowle, the International Youth Poetry Slam Champion.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me, your grade-level dean, or Adrian Green, Director of Inclusivity.

Thanks, and I look forward to a great day next Friday,
Jon Vogels
