Senior Julia Murphy to be Honored at Annual Sportswomen Event

Colorado Academy senior Julia Murphy is among the 45 top female athletes who will be inducted into the Colorado Sportswomen Hall of Fame at the organization’s 41st Annual Awards Celebration on Sunday, March 8, 2015 at the Marriott Denver Tech Center.
 
Murphy is headed to Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania to play field hockey with the Red Devils. At CA, she played center-forward in field hockey and took part in the unprecedented three-time state championship wins by that team. She also played outside midfielder in soccer and played on one state title team. Murphy is one of CA’s powerful seniors who set state field hockey records. She was Team co-captain, and accumulated impressive stats over four years including 44 goals 29 assists and 9 steals, plus player of the year honors in 2012, several game MVP titles, and two-time Denver Post Student-Athlete honors.
 
Murphy was selected to train at the 2015 Futures Elite Academies. These athletes have been identified as possessing the skills, talent and athletic prowess to successfully continue through the next stages in USA Field Hockey’s Olympic Development Pipeline. The Academies exist to provide additional training and competition opportunities for these athletes distinguished with the potential to one day represent Team USA.
 
At the Sportswoman of the Year event, Murphy is winning honors along with the likes of San Antonio Spurs Assistant Coach Becky Hammon, Olympic gold medalist Amy Van Dyken-Rouen and last year’s Sportswoman of the Year, Mikaela Shiffrin. ESPN writer and former University of Colorado basketball player Kate Fagan will speak at the event, and Susie Wargin and Marcia Neville will present the awards. The highlight of the evening will be the surprise presentation of the Sportswoman of the Year Award to the Colorado’s most outstanding athlete on the basis of her 2014 achievements. Founded in 1974, Sportswomen of Colorado is recognized as the first community-based organization in the nation to solely honor female athletes, celebrate their achievements and recognize those whose efforts have advanced girls' and women's individual and team sports endeavors.
