CA Students Head to Math Contest Finals

Congratulations to Upper School students Maggie Gelber, Molly Magid, Kate Rydberg, David Schurman, and George Younger on qualifying for the Final Round of the University of Northern Colorado Math Contest is on Saturday, January 31, 2015 on the UNC Campus in Greeley.

The Final Round is a pencil and paper contest, and questions are more challenging than the First Round. Participants are allowed three hours to work; no electronic devices may be used in the contest. Student papers are graded, and ranks are assigned to the top 25 papers.

The University of Northern Colorado State Math Contest was founded in 1992 by Richard Grassl. The contest was inspired by the Polya Competitions at Stanford, named for Stanford mathematician George Polya. Polya was a Hungarian who immigrated to the United States in 1940 to escape Nazism. In 1945 he published the book How to Solve It, which quickly became his most prized publication. It sold over one million copies and has been translated into 17 languages.
