Metamorphoses’ Primary Set Feature: A Pool of Water

On Friday, December 12 and Saturday, December 13 at 7 p.m. on the Froelicher Theatre Main Stage, the Fine and Performing Arts Department of Colorado Academy will present the groundbreaking show by Mary Zimmerman: Metamorphoses.

The play was inspired by the Latin narrative poem of the same name by the Roman poet Ovid. Comprising 15 books and more than 250 myths, the epic poem chronicles the history of the world within a loose mythical-historical framework.

Mary Zimmerman’s Tony award-winning play uses ten of the myths to explore the theme of transformation. Characters are both human and mythical deities drawn from Greek and Roman culture. There are modern as well as classical characters, and the tone of the play moves freely from the serious to the comedic.

The primary feature of the set in Metamorphoses is a pool of water, which is central to all of the stories, although its function changes. During the show, for instance, it becomes a swimming pool, a washing basin, the River Styx of the Underworld, and the sea.

Evocative music and dramatic lighting will also play a prominent role as we attempt to bring this spectacle to life in Froelicher Theatre. This will be a very exciting and challenging adventure for CA and its Theater and Operations Departments.

The cast includes: Eric Bear, Meredyth Busam, Mollie Cantor, Justin Connerly, Mac Connolly, Sophia Deahl, Eliza Ducnuigeen, Lauren Edwards, Harper Ellsworth, Katie Fink, Michael Fuller, Keenan Gluck, Jess Masinter, Trace Montgomery, Emily Mott,
Chloe Nosan, SunHee Seo, Charles Thomas, Paige Thomas, Olivia White, and Railey Zantop-Zimlinghaus.

The production crew includes: Nick Bigger, Maryam Husain, Justine Jones, Heather Kurtz, Nick Louie, Alex Medema, and Nguyen Pham.

Director Billy Bair and the entire cast and crew invite you to join them for a unique and mysterious adventure into the world of human mythology. Tickets for Metamorphoses are $5 each, and will go on sale online on Friday, December 5 at 8 a.m. on the school website.
