A Spirited Week

Jon Vogels
Tuesday’s service learning and retreat day certainly buoyed spirits and gave all students a chance to think about other things larger than themselves. Freshmen and sophomores went out to various agencies across the metro area, including Ronald McDonald House, Mile High Montessori and the Zuma Horse Rescue Ranch. Juniors spent the day at a nearby multi-element ropes course. Located on the property of Goddard Middle School in Littleton, the course is run by a group called Outer Edge Performance and features high ropes, climbing stations, low balancing elements and teamwork-building structures of all kinds.

Seniors enjoyed a retreat day on Lookout Mountain. There different hikes were offered, each varying in distance and degree of difficulty. Once that was finished they enjoyed lunch and games together before returning to campus.

Because it was Homecoming week, students also chose a theme for each day, kicked off by Monday’s Red, White & Blue celebration of the USA. Wednesday was jersey day (we saw lots of Broncos shirts of course), Thursday was “tropical” and then Friday was an all-school spirit day where students were encouraged to show off their red, black and white. One of the nice traditions of Friday’s Spirit Day is the annual Alumni Office bagel and donut giveaway. Students are greeted at the door by Sue Burleigh and other members of the Alumni Association to receive their morning treats. Later that afternoon, the Homecoming Assembly brings all grades together in the gym for festivities, including the unveiling of last year’s championship banners to adorn the gym wall. Gus the Mustang leads all grades through a cheerful celebration of school spirit and then we have a friendly competition involving four “spirit” teams. On Saturday we shift gears; most of the athletic teams compete, we host our annual car show, and then, finally that evening, the Homecoming Dance.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday parents and faculty were fortunate enough to hear the first SPEAK presenter this year, Rosalind Wiseman. In future blog posts, I will follow up on several of the thought-provoking points she made.  You can also check out her website via the Links section on the US Portal. Looking forward to other great SPEAK events this year!
