Lower School Offers Enrichment Programs

 
The Colorado Academy Lower School is offering students and families a variety of after-school enrichment programs for students. Each of these programs is run separately from CA, but is held on the CA premises.  Sign-up and payment is completed through these outside organizations.
 
Scratch LAB- Creative Computer Coding, Animation & Videogame Design 
Wednesdays, 3:30-5:30 p.m., Meets in the Lower School iLab, through - Dec. 17
Grades 1-5. Students learn to program computers by creating their own video games, animated stories, and interactive art. Learning to code at an early age, participants in Scratch Lab grow as programmers, artists, and engineers. For a flyer and video click: Scratch Lab @ CA.
 
Girls on the Run
Mondays 3:30 p.m. to 5;00 p.m. for girls in grades 3-5, beginning September 8 through November 10. Meetings are held Sadler East.  Girls will train for a 3.1 mile run/walk race to take place in Washington Park on November 9, with a fun, health education lesson plan.  This program promotes individual achievement and self –confidence.  Girls gain self-esteem and learn healthy lifestyle habits while training for a 5K run/walk race.

Chess Club with Todd Bardwick
Meets in the Lower School Science Room after school on several Tuesday afternoons from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. This opportunity is offered three times during the school year.

No prior chess experience is necessary, but many students choose to attend all three sessions during the school year. The class will be structured teaching in the first half hour and then the students will play each other the second half hour. The students are introduced to all phases of the game, etiquette, tactics, and strategies.

Sign-up is on a first-come/first served basis; the fee is $125/child and attendance is limited to 25 students, grades K-5. The dates for fall session are as follows: Sept 9, 16, Oct 7, 14, 28, Nov 11, Dec 2,16

* Todd is a National Master, a 5-time Denver Chess Champion, and writes “The Chess Detective” column for Chess Life magazine. He has three books published: Teaching Chess in the 21st CenturyChess Workbook for Children, and Chess Strategy Workbook. Todd also founded the annual Rocky Mountain Chess Camp for children, one of the oldest and largest chess camps in the country.
