Students Explore the World on International Trips

Jon Vogels
Commencement was literally just a few days in the books before several student groups boarded planes to destinations around the globe.  A group of five rising seniors headed to Buenos Aires, Argentina on an exchange program with the St. Andrews School.  This is the second group we have sent to that school, and next year five students from St. Andrews will come to Colorado.  Another trip ventured to the south of France where they will be doing a language immersion and home stay in that country.  And ten more students, along with chaperones Jen Cotton and Joel Allen, made their way to Rwanda on a two-week program with the World Leadership School, based in Boulder.  Photos from that trip are included here.

A recent blog post from students on the trip featured this observation:
"Near the entrance [to a cave the group was visiting], a youth soccer game was being played and many people were watching. As we pulled in, curious kids came running. We got out of the bus and close to a hundred eyes were looking our way. For the 20 minutes that it took to put on our glove, hairnets, face masks, and helmets [for cave exploration], these eyes were locked on us. Wanting to engage with these children, we began singing the “hokey pokey.” Afterwards, we sang “head, shoulders, knees, and toes,” and asked them to join. We will remember forever how the faces of these children lit up, as soon as we began singing and dancing. Inside the dark cave, we saw beautiful rock formations and many bats. We came out the other side of the cave, to be greeted by our Sonrise High School buddies."

Sounds like an amazing experience so far!
