Interim Is Right Around the Corner

This year once again we will be sending kids out--safely--into the great beyond of our signature experiential education program known as Interim.  Most Interims take place from Tuesday, May 27 to Saturday, May 31, but please check with your students and trip leaders for specifics.  In the Downloads section, please find a document about Interim that I have included in past newsletters.

This is important information sent out earlier this week in a pushpage.  Please check your e-mail accounts for this memo along with the required forms.

SUBJECT: Interim Medications
Medication Policy Reminder
State law is quite clear and strict about administering medications. When a student is at school, delivering a medicine to your child is a simple matter. However, when your child is in Utah, it is a different proposition. We want all of our students to have access to the medications they may need, so I would like to reiterate that Colorado State Law requires that a Non-Prescription and/ or a Prescription Authorization Form must be signed by a parent and a child’s doctor to enable us to give any sort of medication, and all medications must be provided by parents. This means that we must have the following;
Chaperones and interim vendors can only administer medication to students if we have a current Non-Prescription and/ or Prescription Authorization Form on file. If you have not already submitted these forms and medications, they must be turned in to the school nurse by Wednesday, May 21, 2014.
The medication must be in the original packaging with a label indicating the dosage and your son’s/daughter’s name.
Students will not be allowed to carry their own medications. Medications will be kept in the possession of either the CA chaperone or Interim vendor.
A self-carry exception can be made for asthma meds and Epi-pens if the parent has completed a Self-Carry Authorization Form.
You will not be able to hand over medications to the trip leader on the day of trips departure.
Frequently Asked Medication Questions
Q: If my child is prone to minor headaches, stomach pain or allergies, and I have not completed the Non-Prescription Authorization form, can a CA teacher or the interim vendor give my child medications?
A. No. Only medications that have been given to CA and specifically authorized by a doctor can be administered.
Q: If my child has an infection the week prior to interims departure, that requires a prescription antibiotic, can I hand it over to the trip leader the morning the trip departs?
A: No, all medications to be taken by my child must be turned in to the school, along with a signed prescription authorization form, signed by both a parent and doctor, by May 21.
Q: If my child is taking a prescription medication before and during their trip, how do I turn in the medication several days prior to the trips departure, if my child needs to continue taking their medication?
A. Remove a portion of the medication you will leave at home and only deliver to the school the amount of meds (in the original container) that your child will need during the trip.
