Picture (and Marvel at) the Human Brain

And you think the rate of change in technology is mind-numbing?! One doctor and brain researcher says we’ve learned more in the last 40 years about how the human brain works than in the last 400 years, and we all know that we’ve barely scratched the surface.

Here at CA, we know that understanding how the brain learns, retains, and recalls information is critical to teaching each and every student; we, too, have only just begun in our work of trying to connect current brain research in neuroscience with deliberate efforts to be more mindful of student culture and character at Colorado Academy. Occasionally, it is useful to remind ourselves of the marvel and complexity of the human brain. We have learned this much – that it is possible to teach creativity, kindness, concern, and character. That has been a key focus for us this year.

This week, a CA alumnus and grandparent shared with me this video that describes how scientists are mapping neural networks in the human brain. Using video and photography from National Geographic, we begin to understand just how little we know.
