Inspiration Everywhere

Jon Vogels
We were so fortunate this week to be joined by alumna Martha Adams ('86), a documentary filmaker and producer.  Her latest project Girl Rising has literally taken her all around the globe to promote girls education in the developing world.  Telling the stories of 9 girls and young women in 9 different countries, the film spotlights both the global problem of under-educating girls in these countrues, but also shows the power of turning that situation around.  Everyone who has seen Girl Rising this week has been moved in some way; many of our students have been inspired to act.  We will see where that momentum will lead us. Many thanks to teachers Martha Smith, Betsey Coleman and Tom Thorpe for leading the way on this project and for exposing their 9th grade students especially to this global issue.

Also on campus, we have been inspired by the student portfolio shows that have begun to appear in the Gallery over in the Stevens Art Building and in the Upper School.  Student artists Kelly Culshaw and Caitlin Barron were the first to exhibit their work, with Kelly's fantastic drawings complimenting Caitlin's super-colored photography.  Also on display were Lauren Fahrenkrog's bold photo portraits of the girls in the senior class.  The photo, studio art and video portfolio students will continue to display their work over the next several weeks.

Boldness and precision were also a major part of the equation in Mr. Roads' Physics classes this week, as students tested the strength of their handmade suspension bridges.  I was very impressed with both the design and durability of the bridges I saw.  I would be happy to have these students serve as engineers on real building projects!
