Thank You, Parents! PA's Mid-Tri Report

Mike Davis
Another note of thanks to our parent volunteers who work every day to enhance the education that our students get here at Colorado Academy. I am delighted to share this second "Mid-Tri" report from Parent Association President Sharlene Funk on the many ways that our parents are supporting CA.

Parent Association “Mid-Tri Report” January 23, 2014

The Parent Association has had another busy trimester filled with fun, fundraising and friendships. Allow me to fill you in…

Admission season is currently in full swing, and an important part of the application process for most prospective families is taking a campus tour. CA parents provide group tours during the school’s Parent Preview in early November to help families see the campus through the eyes of a parent. But the tour guides are far from finished when Parent Preview is over. The Parent Association Tour Ambassador Committee led by Liz Buckingham Oertel, Ellen Pollock, and Michele Wiseman trains tour guides and schedules individual tours for all prospective parents wanting to “take a closer look.” Thank you to these hard-working committee chairs and members for helping to make prospective families feel so welcome on campus!

The Arts Around Committee has been making a difference in the classrooms. These parent volunteers work year-round to bring art history to life for the Lower School students. They design thematic art lessons and deliver them to the classes. Thanks to chairs Lesley Argent and Rosemarie Wipfelder Kumpe who lead this project and train and schedule these presentations.

I hope that you all were on campus sometime in December to see the handiwork of the Holiday Decorating Committee. This group, led by Kimberly Hak, did a tremendous job of bringing the holiday spirit to campus by adding holiday decor to our main public spaces. Thank you to all these folks for helping to make our campus look happy, merry, and festive!

The Community Building and Clubs Committee chaired by Katie MacPhail is busy throughout the year helping parents pursue interests and make friends. Whether you like to read, play Mah Jongg, knit, hike, bike, ski, or visit museums, this committee helps like-minded parents build community and connections. Thank you, Katie, for your hard work in organizing all these activities and creating opportunities for parents to make new friends.

The Family Support Committee led by Carmen Hall is another year-round group, but their work is on the quiet side. In reality, you may not even know that this committee exists, but when the need arises, they mobilize quickly and efficiently. This group helps families who need emergency support by cooking, driving, or providing childcare. Thank you to Carmen and her team for showing that we support each other when things get tough.

If you have had the opportunity to attend any of CA’s many sporting events, it is likely that you saw the hard work of the Mustang Spirit Club. Thank you to Anne Storjohann and the rest of the committee as they sell concessions at games, drive the snack cart at outdoor events, and help out on spirit events.

The Nominating Committee is critical to the PA because this group, led by Maribeth Younger, makes sure that the Parent Association perpetually has committed volunteers to lead the PA. This group begins its work in November taking nominations and suggestions to fill the 14 different positions on the Executive Committee including President, President-Elect, divisional VPs, Secretary, Treasurer, Communications Coordinator, Gifting Chair, and Volunteer Coordinator.

And last, but by no means, least, I want to thank the Grocery Card chairs Meg Braun and Caitlin Morris. For parents, the Grocery Card program is one of the simplest ways to financially support the PA. The PA makes money when card holders shop. Meg and Caitlin work behind the scenes to register new participants, fulfill orders, and communicate with our grocery card customers. This committee is responsible for a large percentage of money the PA earns each year. So you may not SEE them doing their jobs, but their presence is felt in the money raised.

I continue to be grateful for you all – keep up the great work!
