Practices Our Youngest Children Value

Mike Davis
Ask the teachers you know and they will tell you that they always learn things from their students.  As part of our efforts to look inclusively at our school culture and to build character and community, we have been speaking to different constituencies about our work.  My next On CAmpus newsletter article describes this process in more detail. We have met with faculty, parents, alumni, and now, students, about the types of behavior we want to see more of on CA's campus.

We are working to identify shared practices that will help us create a school culture that is intentional and mindful.  Aside from a meeting with parents last month, a meeting with alumni, and much work on behalf of faculty and staff, we have worked with representative groups of students in each division. I wanted to share some of the comments that our students in first and second grades offered. Their words about important behaviors will bring a smile to your face, and as students are so good at doing, they remind all of us about what is important:

Be yourself.
Be kind.
Be nicer than necessary.
Be a good friend.
Try new things.
Keep a sense of humor.
Be respectful.
Compromise.
Be helpful.
Work hard.
Include others.
Listen to teachers.
Be a good student.
