Congratulations Soccer Champs

Mike Davis
Congratulations to the CA Varsity Boys Soccer Team for winning the 3A State Championship yesterday in a great game against The Classical Academy. Our boys played skillfully, dominating much of the game as they went on to claim a repeat state title with a score of 4-2. With a record of 19-0-1, the soccer team worked hard throughout the season.

Despite TCA getting the first goal less than five minutes into the game, our boys bounced back. Senior Robert Wright quickly scored his first of two goals to seize the momentum of the game. Then, senior J.J. Myers scored to put the Mustangs up 3-1 going into halftime. In the second half, TCA scored again, but Alex Clinkscales put in a sweet goal to put us ahead by 2. Senior goalkeeper Jack Thomas played another fantastic game and had the crowd cheering with some amazing saves. The entire team contributed to the success this season through its hard work.

At one point toward the end of the game, I looked up in the crowd to see hundreds of CA fans -- everyone from Lower School students to Upper Schoolers, and from faculty to alumni -- all there supporting the team. It is always great to see our community out in force, cheering positively and presenting to Denver the phenomenal school of which we are all a part.

We are so proud of this team. Just as for the Girls Varsity Field Hockey team that also won back-to-back state championships, there is tremendous pressure when you live under the shadow of success. Nevertheless, both of these teams played with poise through a series of hard-fought games.

I particularly want to thank Coach Gabe Bernstein and his coaching staff for their leadership and work. When I saw our new coach out on the field in kick-arounds with his players during the pre-season, I had a feeling it was going to be a great season.

Says Bernstein, "These boys have worked extremely hard all season long to get back to the championship game and defend their title. I am so proud of the determination, commitment, and discipline throughout the playoffs and during the regular season. This championship game represented a handful of different pieces coming together for this team, including unselfish midfield play, disciplined defending, and clinical finishing in front of goal. I am just so proud of the players and what they accomplished."

Thanks to all those who came out yesterday to cheer on the players, and thanks for your support of CA. Congratulations. Go Mustangs!
