Parking and Other Great Wonders

Jon Vogels
Changes are coming to the CA parking world.  Already we have opened the new lot to the south and west of the theatre.  Starting next Monday students will have transponders on their windshields which will allow them to open the new gate into that lot.  These transponders stick to the right front windshield (passenger side) and the sensor on the gate "reads" the magnetic stripe which allows the gate.  Thus, as planned ONLY STUDENTS will park in this lot.  All student drivers will have space in this area, so that we can allow the separation of student drivers and parent drivers.  Once the second entrance off of Pierce is open, they will access the lot via that entrance.  Consequently, there is now even more visitor parking on the North Road, as well as spaces in Welborn Lot and in front of Smith Center.

No one I know got into education because they love to manage driving and parking on school campuses, but it is a necessary aspect of school life nonetheless.  I think the improvements we have made will help the daily experience of all of us.  The main idea behind these changes was to add more parking overall and separate the student drivers from the parent drivers since their needs are quite different once they get onto campus.  We had too many near-accidents when students were trying to cross through traffic, and/or when parents were trying to drop off students while other drivers needed to park and walk in.

Other notes: mid-trimester reports will be out next week, in time for parent-teacher conferences.  I will write more about those in next week's blog. . . . Our sports teams continue to fare very well this season;   field hockey and soccer playoffs will be starting soon. . . . The presentation of sketch comedy in CA Skits has been a huge success this year.  Shows have occurred weekly in the Basement Theatre. . . . Many students heard and were inspired by the words of Olympic runner Lopez Lomong from Sudan.  A huge crowd turned out Wednesday night as well. . . . Admissions visitors have started to come for their "shadow day" visits; as always our student hosts are doing a wonderful job of providing a friendly CA ambassador.
