Welcome Back
August 2013 (updated)
Dear CA Upper School Community,
With great anticipation, I am thinking ahead to the upcoming school year. In a matter of
days, teachers will be back in labs and classrooms and students will return to our halls.
At that point, the building literally comes to life. And with that idea in mind, I am very
excited about spending the whole year in our new Upper School. Given the disjointed
nature of last year’s calendar, we did an admirable job of getting acclimated to an
incredible new space. But I am eager to see how we do when we start and finish in the
same place! We have been able to schedule the classrooms and other spaces more
effectively and efficiently and really feel we can take full advantage of all the many
innovative spaces our facility provides.
The summer months have provided a great opportunity for our teachers to engage in
meaningful professional development of all kinds. In addition to many exciting travel
experiences, faculty have been working hard to enhance their ability to integrate
technology into their curricula and prepare for our 1:1 iPad program in the 9th grade. I
have already had conversations with several of those teachers, and they are looking
forward to incorporating their new ideas and practices, while still fostering that
connection between themselves and their students--a true hallmark of a CA education.

The new Upper School Handbook has now been posted on the website. Please read
through it carefully, especially if you are new to Colorado Academy. We regard this as
an essential guide to the policies and procedures of the school. Whether a child is in
1st grade or 10th grade, there are expectations we have of both students and parents
(as well as ourselves) that help us forge the positive and dynamic community we have.
