At the End of the Day, Gratitude

Mike Davis
At the end of the day, there are moments of realization by which you often measure your lot in life, and I find, especially at this time of year, that my daily feeling is one of gratitude. It comes down to being at Colorado Academy in this intensely human endeavor that is education; it is all about impacting lives and being stewards of the future by teaching children.

On Monday and Tuesday, I had the opportunity to host the Kindergarten and fourth grade students and their parents for lunch at my house. These classes both hit the 100% participation mark for the annual fund. We are so grateful for the support from all of our families for your generous giving that allows us to educate your children and fulfill our mission. The Kindergarten kids all showered attention on our new puppy, Lucy, as they explored the creek in my backyard. The fourth grade had an awesome game of capture the flag. It was boys versus girls, and it was a stalemate; so I look forward to next year's fifth graders coming back next year.

On Wednesday of this week was the Senior Dinner at the Head of School’s home. The senior class is invited to celebrate the multi-year friendship and relationship that our advisory groups have formed among each other and with their Upper School advisors. In many cases, this one faculty member and group of students have met nearly daily for the past four years. Their moments together are off the clock, impromptu, and frequently with no other agenda than the bond of friendship.

On Thursday of this week was the Parent Volunteer luncheon where CA honored parents, and particularly those whose last child is graduating this year. To hear the poignant stories of how CA becomes woven into the fabric of families’ lives is the most telling part of how we build and become a community.

Thursday night also was the Middle School Circus, an amazing annual event. How cool is it that we have a circus at our school?! This year, my daughter performed for the first time, and I know she had so much fun preparing for the performance with her classmates. The final product involves juggling with flames and knives, the cube, trapeze, double trapeze, unicycling, poi, devil sticks, Diablo, and fabric acrobatics. After watching the circus now for several years, it is particularly interesting to note how the students improve from sixth grade to eighth grade and how impressive the performances of the older kids have become.

Also on Thursday, CA hosted a dinner for the Class of 1953 as part of our upcoming alumni reunion events. The men of this class shared the same camaraderie with one another and the same reverence for CA that our current graduates do. The stories they tell about times they shared are truly the ties that bind.

And continuing today, Friday, I am reminded by the report on school children from Moore, Oklahoma being reunited with their teachers who did all they could to shield students from the massive tornado there. Students came carrying thank you notes and gifts as they joined together for one last day of the school year. Some thanked teachers for saving their lives; one child simply thanked them for teaching him to write his name.

Thank you, to all of you, for being part of the education of young people, and for being a part of CA.
