Teenagers and the Law/Nutrition Program

Jon Vogels
In addition to our strong academic program, we pride ourselves on our ability to deliver quality character education, as well as a health and wellness program. We take advantage of class meeting times on C days as well as extended advisory blocks on other days. For instance, our juniors have heard a series of leadership-oriented presentations, and our freshmen have learned about STDs and human sexuality from two leading experts. Consulting psychologists Jessica Dolgan and Nicole Fardel also speak to the different grade levels on maintaining a healthy balance in their schoolwork and in their personal relationships.

Over the course of the next several weeks., all four grades will be hearing from two different presenters. First, local attorney (and former prosecutor) Karen Steinhauser will speak to each grade individually on a wide range of topics pertaining to teenagers and the law. The juvenile justice system, driving laws (especially those impacting teenagers under the influence of drugs or alcohol), internet safety and sexual assault are among the topics she covers under the umbrella title of “It’s Not the 70s Anymore.” Ms. Steinhauser spoke to an appreciative parents group a few weeks ago and was willing to return to our school to give similar but student-specific presentations. Her main argument is that laws have become stricter over the last decades and anyone who engages in risky behavior of any kind is much more likely to face stiff consequences. Her tone is not scolding or moralistic, but rather factual. The law is the law.

Also speaking to all four grades separately will be nutritionists Nancy Baruch and Sue Johanning. They are helping our student-athletes better understand how their eating habits can be helpful or problematic to their overall goals, depending on how well they attend to their nutritional needs. They also discuss the dangers of alcohol on the body, particularly as it pertains to athletic performance. Nancy Baruch has a long history of success as a women’s lacrosse coach, but has since launched a career as a nutritionist.  Sue Johanning is a CA parent.  Both relate well to students and appreciate the busy lives of a typical CA teenager.
