CA Announces Student Opportunity for Travel to Haiti

After two successful faculty trips to rural Haiti, Colorado Academy teachers  are ready to take Upper School students to visit CA’s sister school and work with students in the village of Nordette from June 9-14, 2013.

Colorado Academy is announcing the opportunity for up to six students to travel along with five faculty members to Haiti after graduation in June. Students must be rising freshmen, sophomores, or juniors. Previous international travel is highly recommended. They will travel with Dr. Mike Davis, Stuart Mills, Jesse Schumacher, Dani Meyers, and David Colodny. Four of these five faculty and staff have previous experience traveling in Haiti; all have extensive experience traveling abroad. For more on the faculty trip in November, click below.

The itinerary includes flying into Port au Prince and immediately departing in rental jeeps for the city of Mirebalais, where the group will locate its home base before journeying to the small, mountainous village of Nordette. Once there, students and faculty will work together with the children of CA’s sister school, St. Patrick’s, on educational projects that will create a meaningful cultural exchange and service-learning experiences. Faculty will offer advance sessions on the Haitian culture, language, and travel tips.

Students must have a valid passport and must be able to get required vaccines six to eight weeks before the scheduled travel. The required $2,700 fee includes airfare, hotel accommodations, security, all food, and in-country travel.

This promises to be a remarkable and life-changing experience for students and is part of CA’s ongoing sister relationship with the people of Nordette. The partnership was established two years ago, and is one of dozens of partnership programs between U.S. and Haitian schools.
