An Exciting New Partnership

The last seven words of Colorado Academy’s mission statement talk about making a difference in our local and international communities. I want to share news of a new partnership that helps us do just that.

As you may know, CA has a sister school in the rural mountain community of Nordette, Haiti. And now, we are teaming up with The Road to Hope,  a Denver-based non-profit organization dedicated to helping children in that impoverished country. This partnership will provide even more opportunities for our students to learn and help those at our sister school.

The Road to Hope is the work of CA parents Rich and Lisa Harris. You may also know the Harris family by their five adopted children and two biological children at CA.

The Harris family is dedicated to numerous causes that advocate for children, but their devotion to those in Haiti is nothing short of remarkable. They were already focused on issues in Haiti prior to the catastrophic 2010 earthquake, and in fact had already made arrangements to adopt two Haitian children when the earthquake hit. It took days for them to learn whether those children had survived the quake.

Having learned from the sober lessons that beset many aid groups helping in Haiti, the Harris family established a non-profit organization here to help fund projects that will have a meaningful and long-lasting impact in that country, including building schools, providing clean water, and even, with the help of their son Zach, helping to launch an orchestra at a school in Mirebalais. Rich and Zach accompanied our faculty team that visited Haiti last November in preparation for a student trip this June. For more on the faculty trip in November, click here: Our Sister School in Haiti.  Their unrelenting support has led The Road to Hope to also help CA’s sister school by underwriting projects there.

The Road to Hope is the third organization in recent years with which CA has partnered to create long-lasting change around the world. In 2001, CA student Ashley Shuyler launched AfricAid, an organization dedicated to supporting girls’ education in Tanzania. Since its inception, AfricAid has raised more than $1 million and reached more than 40,000 students there. In 2003, CA student Ana Dodson launched the non-profit Peruvian Hearts to help the children of her native Peru. Peruvian Hearts creates programs that support nutrition, literacy, and education for Peruvian children living in poverty.

I am inspired and moved by the work of all of these people, and I am so grateful that they are in our community. When I have occasion to visit with anyone in the Harris family, I know that some people ask in amazement how they can do what they do for others. The question we really ought to be asking is why aren't we all doing the same?
