Learning Together About Parenting

Our SPEAK lecture events prove time and again to be such a valuable resource for students, families, and our faculty. In the past month, we have had some great speakers come to campus and challenge our community with new ideas and provide an opportunity for a shared conversation about important issues. I want to plug this Thursday's speaker, Dr. Ned Hallowell. The title of his book should make you want to drop everything and come out to campus: Crazy Busy: Overstretched, Overbooked, and About to Snap! In this award-winning book, Dr. Hallowell offers some concrete advice and solutions for how we might unsnarl ourselves from our over-scheduled and fast-paced lives. As parents, we know our children have more on their plates than any other generation. They balance all kinds of activities and challenges. In a school like CA, where there is so much student talent and excellence, this can be challenging for young people.

I like to ponder about what the world will look like when our students are adults and how we have contributed to preparing them for the future. In my world of professional education, I am constantly amazed by the creation of new ideas and approaches. With TED talks and educational blogs, there is a flurry of new ideas that only seems to have increased in the past ten years. This is the reality in many fields and professions where innovation and change are emphasized and celebrated.

We all sense and feel that the world is changing quickly and that change is not ending anytime soon. From my own experience in academia and from my understanding of history, we all know that true breakthroughs and new ideas take time to develop. You can't necessarily rush transformative change. Being contemplative and focused are important characteristics. Young people need to learn how to find balance in their lives. This is an important a skill as anything else we can teach. I encourage you to attend this workshop that will be held this Thursday, January 31 at 9:00 a.m. in the new Upper School Knowles Hall. (Click here  to RSVP) Dr. Hallowell's talk will be preceded by division meetings at 8:30 a.m.
