Finding the Right Balance with Homework

I read an interesting article today about homework. I also find this issue fascinating. As a student, I had teachers who routinely doled out pure drudgery in the form of worksheets and endless repetitive tasks.  I had other instructors who challenged me with equally time-consuming work, but it was work that got me excited about learning. At CA, we've spent a lot of time thinking about homework. We've tried to move in a direction of assigning work that furthers students’ critical-thinking, creative, collaborative, and communication skills.  We've re-examined our schedule and calendar to find ways to improve the quality of life of students by reducing homework.  For those new to CA, we increased class time and moved to a rotational schedule to allow students to do more work in class under a teacher's supervision. We have teachers who have "flipped" their classrooms to allow for greater student support.  Still, homework is important, and it does serve a purpose in promoting both high-level critical thinking and high-level content.
