A Celebration of Music

Jon Vogels
Once again the combined CA choirs wowed the audience last night in their annual fall concert. The concert featured all three choirs: Men's, Women's, and Chamber choirs plus the three specialty groups, Chanteurs, Sorella, and Fratelli, all led by our choral director, Cindy Jordan. The program included traditional, folk, classical and pop music. Mrs. Jordan told me earlier in the week that she thought this particular concert would demonstrate the school's work on the "Five C's" as Chamber choir "performed music they had learned with section leaders, and in their own respective voice parts, on their own. It's exciting to see how their knowledge and interpretation comes through in the music."

Several years ago, CA shifted the location of the fall and spring concerts to the LifeSource Adventist Church, just down the Frontage Road near our campus. The acoustics are terrific, the seating is ample, and our hosts have been nothing but gracious. Once again, this year's fall performance benefitted from this venue.

Of course, Cindy Jordan deserves a huge amount of the credit for the school's success and reputation in this area. Since 1978 (that's not a typo!), Mrs. Jordan has been at the forefront of our music program. Not only does she find ways to challenge her students in a supportive way, she consistently freshens up her program, so that there are new challenges for her as well. That is a sign of a true professional, a person not content to rest on her laurels. She also finds way creative ways to incorporate talented student musicians into the performances, whether they are accompanying on piano, violin, or providing rhythm to support the full sound of the combined choir.

Fine and Performing Arts Chairman Angel Vigil, also a longtime CA faculty member, notes that "The CA choir program is one of the strongest examples of student excellence in performance. Generations of CA students have committed their time and energy to expressing their joy of singing. The choir concerts are true demonstrations of [what] occurs when a gifted teacher and passionate students come together in the pursuit of artistic excellence."

One of the hallmarks of the performing arts shares a similarity to team sports. Participants understand that they are part of something bigger, that they are more than the sum of the parts. The bonds they form with each other are meaningful and enduring. Through their artistic collaborations, they can create, literally, beautiful music together.

In my ten years at CA, I have been so consistently dazzled by the quality of our arts program that I have run out of superlatives. We can sometimes take this aspect of our school life for granted, so I wanted to be sure to provide this "shout out" and encourage others to attend one of the two remaining concerts this year.
