Eleven Students Win Writing Awards

The following Colorado Academy students are among the West Writing Region-at-Large Regional
Winners for the 2012 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards:
 
Brooklyn Batey-Jarmon (’12) , Personal Essay/Memoir: The Past of the Pass, Silver Key
Raquel DeSantis (’12) Dramatic Script: 640 Flights, Two RedBulls, and One Bag of Skittles, Gold Key
Raquel DeSantis Persuasive Writing: Twi-Hards vs. Dumbledore's Army, Honorable Mention
Theresa Ho (‘15) Poetry: Where I'm From, [, Litany, To: Shoe, Love: Brush, Gold Key
Theresa Ho Personal Essay/Memoir: Letter to a Pig-Tailed Girl, Silver Key
Andrew MacPhail (’15) Poetry: Car, The Making of a Freshman Boy, Grave,  Silver Key
Molly Magid (’15) Poetry: Ties to My Past,  ><, Silver Key
Jessica Masinter (’15) Poetry: Faces of the Past, Jellyfish Sting, 0, Silver Key
Molly O'Neil (’14) Personal Essay/Memoir: Shattered Facades, Honorable Mention
Jazmyn Tanski (’12) Personal Essay/Memoir: Dr. Eilert's Office, Silver Key
Michael Gallagher ('12) Personal Essay/Memoir: When You've Done, Honorable Mention 
 
Works that receive Gold Keys are automatically forwarded for National judging, which is done by by panels of artists, writers, and creative professionals. The Gold Key is the highest level of achievement on the regional level and places students in the top 10% of their region. The Silver Key is high honors on the regional level and places students in the top 15% of their region. Honorable Mention distinction shows tremendous creative promise and places students in the top 20% of their region.

Since 1923, The Awards have recognized some of America's most celebrated artists while they were teenagers, including: Andy Warhol, Richard Avedon, Cy Twombly, Robert Indiana, Kay WalkingStick, Philip Pearlstein, and John Baldessari.
 
Congratulations to teachers Betsey Coleman, Charles Coleman, and Karen Eagleton who helped their students submit writing for these awards.
